Abstract:
The study investigated the effects of urbanization growth on agricultural land in the Cyuve sector
of Musanze district, Northern Province, spanning from 2005 to 2022. To analyze and map these
changes, I utilized ArcGIS and Landsat images and google earth. I collected and analysed data
through a combination of fieldwork, reconnaissance, and data integration methods.
The findings of the study indicated substantial alterations in land utilization patterns over the
specified period. There was a noticeable in urbanized areas accompanied by a decline in
7
agricultural land from 68% to 50% in 2022. This transformation was primarily driven by the
rapid expansion of urban areas due to population migration and urban development, resulting in
a 18% reduction in agricultural land between 2005 and 2022 after 17 years. The prediction found
that in 2050 agricultural land will decline to 47% while built up area will increase 54%
Considering these findings, it is advisable for the Cyuve sector to prioritize the preservation of
the remaining arable land to protect and sustain agricultural resources in the face of urbanization
pressures.
