Abstract:
The purpose of this research was to analyze the contribution of modern agriculture on food security in rural areas of Rwanda, in Muhanga sector. The study emphasis on the following objectives. Firstly, to analyze the aspects of modern agriculture related to the food security. Secondly, to examine the level of food security before modern agriculture thirdly, to establish the benefits to the farmers for using modern agriculture fourth is to investigate the factors hindering the utilization of modern agriculture and the fifth is to find out the level of food security after modern agriculture. The methodology used contains observation to collect data, questionnaires, interview and documentary. The findings reveal that, agricultural modernization and its role in ensuring food in Muhanga sector is not well captured. The objective number one reveal that 95.6% respondents confirmed that improved seeds are the aspect of modern agriculture in Muhanga sector, 97.1% respondents agreed that use chemical fertilizer is the aspect of modern agriculture, 98.5% respondents indicated that pesticide is the aspect of modern agriculture, 94.1% respondents confirmed that land use consolidation are the aspect of modern agriculture in Muhanga sector. The objective number two show that, In Muhanga sector food security before modern agriculture is insufficient with 58.8% as the findings from respondents, 36.8% they confirmed that food security is moderate sufficient, and 4.4% respondents indicated that the level of food security before modern agriculture is not sufficient. The objective number three show that, 70.6% respondents confirmed that after modern agriculture there is food security which is very sufficient, 22.1% they were agreed that food security is moderately sufficient after modern agriculture last is 7.4% respondents shown that after modern agriculture if not sufficient in Muhanga sector. The recommendation address to Muhanga sector should encourage farmers to use modern farming in order to increase the food security.
