dc.description.abstract Effective material management is a critical determinant of construction site performance, particularly for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). This study examines the impact of material management practices on construction projects in Gisozi Sector, Gasabo District, Rwanda. The research assesses current material management practices, analyzes their effect on project cost and time performance, identifies key challenges faced by SMEs in material storage, supply chain management, and procurement, and proposes strategies to improve material management efficiency. Data was collected through surveys and interviews with SME stakeholders, complemented by case studies of construction projects in the Gisozi Sector. The study reveals that SMEs rely heavily on informal material management methods, including manual inventory control, temporary on-site storage, and just-in-time procurement. These practices contribute to cost overruns, project delays, and material wastage. Furthermore, SMEs face significant challenges such as inadequate storage facilities, unreliable supply chains, and inconsistent material quality, which exacerbate these inefficiencies. The findings also highlight the detrimental impact of poor material management on project performance, particularly in terms of budget and schedule adherence. To address these challenges, the study proposes strategies including the adoption of digital inventory and procurement systems, the establishment of long-term supplier agreements, improved storage and handling practices, and the promotion of waste management and recycling. By implementing these strategies, SMEs can enhance material availability, reduce costs, and improve the overall performance of construction sites in Gisozi. en_US
