Abstract:
This study focuses on the geotechnical investigation and foundation design for a proposed multi-
story commercial building in Kicukiro-Kanombe, Kigali, Rwanda. With rapid urbanization and
rising land costs, there is an urgent need for robust geotechnical practices to ensure the safety and
stability of structures. The research begins with an analysis of the site's unique geological
conditions, including lateritic soils and topographical challenges, which influence foundation
behavior. Through methods such as soil sampling and bearing capacity assessment, the study
evaluates the soil properties, groundwater conditions, and potential geotechnical hazards.
The objectives include examining the stability and strength of existing foundations to support
additional loads, assessing the soil’s bearing capacity, and reviewing the structural integrity of
columns and footings. Preliminary findings indicate that the estimated ultimate bearing capacity of
the soil is approximately 172.88 kN/m2, capable of supporting the required loads for the proposed
construction. The existing foundation and columns demonstrate sufficient capacity to accommodate
the anticipated loads, providing a safe and stable foundation for the new structure.
