Abstract:
The aim of this project “Assessment of the impact of size of aggregates on the compressive strength of
concrete” was to carry out all tests needed because there are many problems of collapsing structures
due to low compressive strength of concrete. That’s why in my project for methodology and project
instruments I used experiments in laboratory such as Sieve analysis test, Los Angeles test, Water
absorption test and Compressive strength test.
The results of laboratory test for the aggregates selected for this project are presented in chapter four.
They are presented in tables, graphs and chart. The results are for sieve analysis showed that my sample
was 100% coarse aggregates because it didn’t pass 4.75mm sieve, for Los Angeles abrasion test results
indicated that my aggregates have abrasion resistance of 29%, for water absorption test I found that the
crushed stones had water absorption capacity of 2.737% and river aggregates with absorption capacity
of 9.589% and for the compressive strength test I’ve found out that aggregates with sizes varies between
20-25 has high compressive strength compared to 1016, and 16-20. Aggregates with sizes varies
between 10-16 has 17.11N/mm2
, 16-20 has 24.67N/mm2
and 20-25 has 25.19N/mm2 of average
compressive strength.
After completing the project work, I recommended that the contractors must check the size, abrasion
resistance and water absorption capacity of aggregates they are going to use before starting the work.
And also they should avoid using aggregates with size 10-16mm in heavy concrete structures like beam,
column, sub-column because it cannot resist to tension due to low average compressive strength of
17.11N/mm2
